Foreign Drivers in UK
If you are visiting the United Kingdom as a “driver” or it is your new place of residence, on this page, we will provide you with essential information for driving on British roads. If you have a valid driving license issued in any EU/EEA country, you do not need to immediately exchange it for a British driving license. Your license is valid in the UK until the age of 70 or for up to 3 years after settling here, whichever occurs first.
EU/EEA Countries:
Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Liechtenstein, Iceland, Norway.
You can also exchange valid driving licenses issued in one of the following countries: Australia, Barbados, British Virgin Islands, Canada, Falkland Islands, Gibraltar, Hong Kong, Japan, Monaco, New Zealand, South Korea, Singapore, South Africa, Switzerland, Zimbabwe.
Note! If you have a valid license from one of these countries, you can drive in the UK for up to 1 year using that license. You can exchange licenses issued in the above-listed countries for a British license up to 5 years after arriving in the UK.
Important! If you do not exchange your license within 5 years, you will need to apply for a temporary driving license and pass both the theory and practical tests.
Permanent UK Residents You generally won’t receive a full British license unless the UK is your permanent place of residence. Normal residence means the place where you normally live and have personal or professional connections. After moving to the UK from another EU/EEA country, you usually need to have lived or studied in the UK for at least six months in the last 12 months before applying for a driving test. You may be asked to provide evidence of this.
New UK residents who have ever had or currently have health issues should visit the website www.direct.gov.uk/motoring and check “Medical Rules for Drivers.”
Licenses from countries other than the EU/EEA or those listed above cannot be exchanged. However, you can drive in the UK using licenses from other countries or an International Driving Permit for up to one year. After this period, you will need to take a driving test to obtain a British license. Information on how to apply
